New Look

Not sure I like it, but design isn't really my greatest talent. I've been contemplating moving to Wordpress, but I'm too lazy and busy to deal with it right now, so I'm experimenting here a little. I wanted to preserve the theatrical theme (I still feel like I'm role playing) and color scheme. Don't be surprised if things change again

  1. YESSSSSSSSYESSSSSSSYESSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!! Black text on white background is infinity bajillion fuckzillion times better than that goddamn horrible motherfucken white-on-black shitte you've had.

But you should really move to Wordpress. It is not very complicated, and I would be happy to help you with any questions as you make the transition. Commenting is much better!

  2. Thanks for the offer. I know Wordpress isn't too complicated and is better for commenting (something I never even thought of when I originally got started). I've used it a bit for work stuff, but the question is partly whether I want to migrate this whole thing over or just restart as After Academe 2.0. Either of those options would require more effort than just fucking around with this. Sooner or later I'll switch, though, possibly when I'm tired of the rather limited design options.

Hopefully, you're not too offended by black text on a mustard background. Might change again.

  4. Haha, you wish!! No, the white just seemed too bright against the red curtain, and I can't change the color of the curtain (stupid Blogger!). What I was going for was a sort of parchment look ... But that's a different template. Again, Blogger is pissing me off. These design experiments might move me to Wordpress sooner rather than later. What the hell is wrong with black on mustard anyway?

  5. It starts with black-on-mustard, and the next thing you know, chartreuse-on-burnt-umber!

  6. I actually have to admit that i like your red curtain background. I see it as an analogy to the break with the academic world..the curtains close it off from view..its out of sight.

  7. Thanks! That's actually a design update from the original. I was from the start going for the red/black/white aesthetic, but the original background, for like the first day or two of the blog's existence, was a red abstract that looked like blood. Maybe it was blood. I don't know. I liked it because it reflected the idea of a bad romance/bad break-up, which is also a metaphor I've used a lot for my relationship with academe. But then people told me it was just kind of gross, so I tried to find something else in red to fit the color scheme. Et voila! The curtian not only fit the color scheme but also reflected a more interesting way of thinking about things -- the end of an act or a play, the beginning of a new one, concealment, drama, suspense, uncertainty, mystery, anticipation, ...
